Proof that Portugal Has One of the Most Wave-Rich Coastlines in the World | The Inertia

You can trash talk about Peniche sardines all you want, mate. But in terms of waves, there are few coastlines as rich as the one along this small country.

I drive to Peniche every year to cover the Meo Rip Curl Peniche Pro. I shoot the comp backstage and behind the scenes, take photos of guys taking photos, and then I look for great free surf sessions around the peninsula. This year though, I stayed home in the Algarve and shot Nic von Rupp surfing in Sagres, then headed up for a quick drive to Ericeira to shoot Cave with Albee Layer, Torrey Meister, and Nic. The waves in Peniche were heavily criticized during the contest, but perhaps it was all just because John John lost in the quarters. Meanwhile, this gallery shows the variety of Portugal’s waves, from the south coast to the reefs of Ericeira.
