Having grown up on Long Island, I wanted to show how beautiful the south shore of NY is through the eyes of a surfer.
I chose to do this by challenging myself and sharing a fictional story instead of taking the documentary route.
The old sailor’s saying “Time and tide wait for no man” has always stuck with me because of how accurately it depicts surfing in New York. It’s very hard to find good waves in NY with all the elements needed to line up (wind, tide, swell from storms that don’t come that often, sandbars eroding etc.). It’s easy to spend entire days searching for good waves and never find them. Meanwhile, the best bet to getting a good wave boils down to surfing through the freezing winters. This still leaves no guarantees and is where our story begins with Joe on the search.
From shooting this to sleepless nights conceptualizing, organizing, and editing this past winter, directing an original soundtrack, reaching out to venues since early this spring, and making an events calendar that will showcase this film through summer, it’s been a journey I’m proud of, to say the least. The film itself will be benefiting local charities and conservation organizations at each event this summer.
Note: Screenings of Time & Tide start next week. You can find the events calendar here.
