Somewhere in the Netherlands Waves Wrap in a Semicircle Once Every 10 Years

This might be the novelty wave to end all novelty waves.



The surf’s far from world class. But what the North Sea lacks in surf this little spot makes up for in novelty. Recently, the boys behind Blue Magazine in Germany found themselves in the Netherlands chasing a once-every-ten-years spot where waves literally wrap around a semi-circular harbor wall. They aren’t exactly getting barreled, but how often do you get double hand drags along a curving, centuries-old European brick wall on neon soft tops in surf? Not often. Probably never.

Here’s what they had to say about the experience:

“Roofs were covered. Street lamps were uprooted. Bicycles flew through the area – sometimes including cyclists. Last month, Holland was hit by a fierce hurricane. Shortly before, two onshore optimists met in the harbor of Scheveningen to catch a spot that breaks approximately every 10 years. Where there is a will is also a wave.”
